India’s space exploration efforts are about to reach a significant milestone with the launch of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission. Scheduled for today at 9:58 PM IST, the mission will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR in Sriharikota aboard the PSLV-C60 rocket.
What is SpaDeX?
The primary goal of the SpaDeX mission is to develop and demonstrate groundbreaking technology for the rendezvous, docking, and undocking of two small spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. These spacecraft, SDX01 (the Chaser) and SDX02 (the Target), will perform complex docking manoeuvres, marking a crucial step towards India’s own space station ambitions.
With this mission, India is set to become the fourth country globally to achieve in-space docking, a key technology required for future space missions. The success of SpaDeX will not only enhance India’s space capabilities but also pave the way for more advanced operations, including space station development.
Both spacecraft involved in the SpaDeX mission will be controlled and monitored from ISRO’s ISTRAC (ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network). The spacecraft will also receive support from various ISRO centers, including UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), VSSC, LPSC, SAC, IISU, and LEOS. These stations ensure smooth communication and operational control as the spacecraft perform docking procedures in orbit.
Key Features of the SpaDeX Spacecraft
Both Chaser and Target spacecraft are equipped with a differential GNSS-based Satellite Positioning System (SPS), which will provide Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions during their orbital operations. This advanced technology ensures the precise maneuvering needed for successful docking.
The SpaDeX mission is not just a technological demonstration; it is also an important step toward India’s plans for its own space station. As ISRO makes final preparations for the PSLV-C60 rocket launch, excitement is building up around the mission’s potential to transform India’s role in global space exploration.
With the launch just hours away, India’s space program is poised to make history, setting the stage for more ambitious missions in the future.
