In a surprising political move, the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) has officially withdrawn its support from the N Biren Singh-led BJP government in Manipur. This development, although not expected to impact the government’s stability, sends a strong political message, given that JD(U) is a key ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Bihar.
The decision comes months after another important ally, the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP), withdrew support to the Biren Singh government in Manipur. JD(U), which had won six seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, saw a significant shift as five of its MLAs later joined the BJP, consolidating the ruling party’s strength. Currently, the BJP holds 37 seats in the 60-member Assembly, with additional backing from the Naga People’s Front and three Independents, ensuring its majority.
The official letter confirming JD(U)’s withdrawal was issued by Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, the party’s president in Manipur. In the letter, JD(U) made it clear that its lone MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir, will now sit in the opposition benches, signaling the end of their alliance with the BJP government.
While the immediate impact on the BJP’s position in Manipur appears minimal, the development is notable. JD(U), led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, plays a significant role in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Earlier this year, JD(U) won 12 seats in the general election, and its support was crucial for the BJP to reach the majority mark after its seat count dropped.
Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) has made headlines in recent years for its shifting political alliances, and this move in Manipur further adds to the political intrigue ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
