In a major relief for daily commuters, the Maharashtra government has announced a complete toll waiver for light motor vehicles at all five toll booths in Mumbai. The decision, revealed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a Cabinet meeting on Monday, will take effect at midnight.
Toll waiver has been applied to light motor vehicles category which includes cars, jeeps, vans, and small trucks – vehicles primarily designed to carry passengers or goods.
Over six lakh vehicles cross Mumbai every day, with 80% of them being light motor vehicles. This waiver will significantly benefit daily travelers, especially ahead of the Diwali festive season.
The toll waiver will be effective at Dahisar, LBS Road-Mulund, Eastern Express Highway-Mulund, Airoli Creek Bridge, and Vashi will be free of charge for light motor vehicles.
With Diwali around the corner and the city gearing up for increased travel, this move aims to ease congestion and reduce wait times for commuters entering and exiting Mumbai. Many travelers have long complained about delays at these toll points, and this waiver is expected to bring relief to those heading home for the festivities.
The toll waiver comes after persistent demands from various political groups, including Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and leaders from both factions of Shiv Sena. Aaditya Thackeray, leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), had also recently reiterated the call for removing tolls at Mumbai’s entry points.
With this decision, commuters can now travel without paying toll fees, making the festive season just a little bit easier for millions.
