Potato prices in Assam have surged following a controversial decision by the West Bengal government to ban the export of potatoes to the North East. The Mamata Banerjee-led government in Bengal has imposed a ban on exporting potatoes to Assam and other North Eastern states, which has led to a sudden increase in prices.
A week ago, the price of old potatoes in Assam’s markets was Rs 30 per kg. However, prices have now risen to Rs 40 per kg. Meanwhile, the price of new potatoes has jumped from Rs 40 to Rs 60 per kg, marking an increase of Rs 15-20 in just one week.
The situation has been further worsened by the hundreds of trucks loaded with potatoes that are stranded at Barobisa and Pakriguri in Bengal. These trucks have been stuck for 3 to 5 days, with the Bengal administration not allowing the potato shipments to enter Assam.
The Bengal government’s decision aims to control the rising prices of potatoes within its own state, but it has had a significant impact on the potato supply to Assam, leaving the common people concerned about the increasing prices.
