A recent investigation has revealed a shocking fertility scam in Nigeria, where fraudsters posing as doctors deceive desperate women with false promises of “miracle fertility treatments” that are very expensive.
According to a report by BBC Africa Eye, illegal clinics in Nigeria are exploiting vulnerable women who face intense societal pressure to conceive. These women, desperate to avoid the stigma of infertility, are lured by scammers offering treatments that include injections, drinks, or substances inserted into the vagina. Victims are assured that these treatments will guarantee pregnancy, despite having no medical basis.
Some women have reported experiencing bodily changes, such as swollen stomachs, which led them to believe they were pregnant. The scammers go so far as to instruct victims to avoid hospitals and conventional doctors, insisting that standard medical scans cannot detect the “baby,” as it is supposedly growing outside the womb. This tactic isolates the women, preventing them from confirming the deception.
When the time comes for delivery, the women are charged additional fees for a “rare drug” to induce labor. Disturbingly, accounts of the “delivery” process vary but are consistently alarming. Some victims wake up with Caesarean-like scars, while others are injected with hallucinogens, leading them to believe they have given birth.
In one heart-wrenching account, a victim described the painful experience of being injected and told to push, though she never explained how she received her baby, named Hope.
A raid by state health authorities uncovered even more disturbing practices, revealing that women, some as young as 17, were held against their will and forced to sell their newborns. These babies were then handed to the victims of the scam as their “biological children.”
Authorities are now investigating the full extent of the scam, and steps are being taken to bring those responsible to justice.
