The Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium was electric with excitement as Smriti Mandhana, the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, created history in the 3rd One Day International (ODI) against Ireland. Mandhana smashed the fastest century by an Indian woman, taking just 70 balls to reach the landmark, rewriting the record books and sending fans into frenzy.
Mandhana’s blistering century not only propelled India towards a likely series whitewash but also saw her surpass Harmanpreet Kaur’s previous record of 87 balls for the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian woman. The innings was a showcase of aggressive yet elegant batting, with Mandhana striking 14 boundaries and 3 sixes. Her powerful shots lit up the ground as she dominated the Irish bowlers from the start.
This 70-ball hundred was also the joint seventh-fastest in women’s ODI history. The fastest ever remains with Meg Lanning, who scored a 45-ball hundred against New Zealand in 2012. Mandhana’s achievement marked her 10th ODI century, making her only the fourth player in women’s cricket to hit 10 or more hundreds in the format, further solidifying her place among the game’s elite.
Mandhana’s brilliance was complemented by young Pratika Rawal at the other end. The duo added an incredible 233 runs for the first wicket – the third-highest partnership for India in women’s ODIs. Rawal, who has had a stellar start to her ODI career, provided perfect support as Mandhana tormented the opposition bowlers, making the record-breaking partnership possible.
With this unforgettable performance, Smriti Mandhana not only set new records but also reminded the world of the strength and depth of Indian women’s cricket, setting the stage for even more historic moments to come.
