As many as 20 people have died from consuming toxic liquor in Siwan, Bihar. This crisis began late Tuesday night and continued into Wednesday, with the village of Sonadhani in the Bhagwanpur block being particularly affected. On Thursday, four additional fatalities were reported.
In response to this tragic situation, authorities have launched an investigation. The police headquarters has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Excise Enforcement Unit. This team has been dispatched to Siwan and the neighboring areas of Saran to gather evidence and interview the families of the deceased as well as local residents.
The situation at Siwan Sadar Hospital remains dire, as patients suffering from alcohol poisoning continued to arrive late Wednesday evening. Many were brought in by family members using ambulances and private vehicles, often displaying severe symptoms like impaired vision. Local authorities have reassured residents that they can seek medical help without fearing legal repercussions.
Many patients have reported significant vision issues, necessitating urgent transfers to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) for specialized treatment. Community members have raised concerns about alleged collusion between local law enforcement and alcohol traffickers, asserting that liquor smugglers continue to operate freely despite police raids. The prohibition on alcohol in the district has not been effectively enforced, allowing illegal trade to thrive.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are calling on the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to alcohol trafficking.
