India’s space sector is on the cusp of transformation, and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to undergo a leadership change. V. Narayanan, an esteemed rocket and spacecraft propulsion expert, will take over from S. Somanath as the new Chairman of ISRO, beginning on January 14, 2025. This comes at a critical time as India’s space agency gears up for major milestones, including the Gaganyaan human spaceflight, Chandrayaan-4 mission, and the development of India’s own space station.
Dr. V. Narayanan has had a long and illustrious career at ISRO, having joined the organization in 1984. Over the years, he has held key positions and contributed to several landmark space projects. Notably, he was appointed Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in January 2018, where he made significant contributions in developing propulsion systems for various space missions.
Dr. Narayanan played a pivotal role in the creation of the Solid Propulsion Systems for the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and the Rohini Sounding Rockets, laying the groundwork for many of ISRO’s early successes. His leadership was also instrumental in the development of the GSLV Mk III C25 Cryogenic Project, which saw the successful use of the C25 Cryogenic Stage, a critical component in launching payloads into space.
Dr. Narayanan’s expertise has been central to the success of several high-profile missions. Under his guidance, the LPSC developed propulsion systems for the Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3 missions. The L110 Liquid Stage and C25 Cryogenic Stage were key components in transporting the spacecraft from Earth to the Moon’s orbit, playing a crucial role in India’s successful lunar exploration missions.
Additionally, Dr. Narayanan chaired the National Level Expert Committee that analyzed the Chandrayaan-2 landing and provided recommendations, which were later implemented in the Chandrayaan-3 mission, contributing to its success.
One of Dr. Narayanan’s most important contributions has been to India’s Gaganyaan program, the country’s ambitious human spaceflight mission. He was instrumental in human-rating the LVM3 vehicle and developing the human-rated L110 and C32 Cryogenic Stages, along with Environmental Control and Safety Systems and propulsion systems for the Service and Crew modules. His leadership also played a key role in the successful demonstration of the crew escape system during the Test Vehicle Demonstration mission.
With nearly four decades of experience in rocket and spacecraft propulsion, Dr. V. Narayanan’s appointment as ISRO Chairman marks a significant milestone for India’s space program. His expertise and leadership will be vital in steering the nation’s space ambitions forward, ensuring India remains a dominant force in the global space community.
As he takes on this new role, Dr. Narayanan’s extensive experience and visionary leadership are expected to guide ISRO through the exciting years ahead, with monumental missions such as Gaganyaan, Chandrayaan-4, and the space station in the pipeline.
