Today is National Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas. Every year, November 26 is celebrated as Constitution Day to mark a momentous occasion in India’s history – the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949 by the Constituent Assembly of India. This day commemorates the commitment to the constitutional values that shape India as a sovereign, democratic, and inclusive nation.
On January 26, 1950, the Constitution came into effect, the day is observed annually as Republic Day. But, it was on November 26, 1949, that the Constituent Assembly gave its final approval to the document, marking the completion of a monumental process that would define the future of the nation.
In 2015, the Government of India, through the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, declared November 26 as Constitution Day to honor the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution. Before 2015, this day was celebrated as Law Day, but the new designation pays tribute to the visionary leadership of Dr. Ambedkar and the monumental document he helped create.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, known as the Father of the Indian Constitution, played a pivotal role in drafting the document that laid the foundation for the world’s largest democracy. His tireless efforts ensured that the Constitution not only upheld fundamental rights and justice but also promoted equality and social justice for all citizens.
The Indian Constitution, with its 1,17,360 words (in the English version), is the longest written constitution in the world. It initially consisted of 395 Articles and 8 Schedules, and today, it serves as the cornerstone of the Indian Republic. The Preamble of the Constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic, committed to securing justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all its citizens.
Constitution Day is not just a day to remember the adoption of the Constitution, but also to reflect on the importance of the values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity that it guarantees. It underscores the need for national unity, as these ideals form the bedrock of Indian democracy and society.
