Zakir Hussain, renowned globally as a tabla maestro with an infectious smile, left behind a legacy not only in music but also in an unexpected win. In 1994, Zakir was voted the “sexiest man” by women readers of the Indian magazine Gentleman, beating none other than Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan.
In a conversation with author Nasreen Munni Kabir for her book Zakir Hussain: A Life in Music, the maestro recalled the surprising turn of events. He shared that the magazine team had approached him to model for the cover, asking him to wear suits and jackets. However, they were taken aback when Zakir emerged as the winner, as they had initially assumed Amitabh Bachchan would take the title. “They were equally shocked and surprised that I won the greatest number of votes,” Zakir told Nasreen, as reported by news agency PTI.
Zakir Hussain passed away on the morning of December 16, 2024, after a prolonged illness, leaving behind an indelible mark on the world of music and beyond.
