A devastating tragedy struck Srinagar when five members of a family were found dead in their rented accommodation. The deceased include a couple, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat and Saleema, along with their three young children: Areeb (3), Hamza, and their one-month-old baby. The family hailed from the Uri area of Baramulla district.
Neighbours raised the alarm after noticing an eerie silence from the family throughout the day. Authorities rushed to the scene on Sunday evening and discovered the family’s bodies. Preliminary investigations suggest suffocation as the cause of death, possibly due to the use of a heater in their home during one of the valley’s coldest nights.
Heating devices, often used during cold nights in the region, have raised safety concerns. Experts warn that improper use of heating gadgets can cause carbon monoxide buildup, depleting oxygen levels in closed rooms, leading to suffocation.
Police and forensic teams are investigating the incident to confirm the exact cause of death. Authorities have sent the bodies for post-mortem, and relatives in Uri have been informed. The incident marks the second tragedy in the region within a short span. Just days earlier, two minors perished in a fire at their home in Tangmarg, Baramulla.
Local officials are urging residents to exercise caution when using heating devices and ensure proper ventilation to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
