The vote counting for the crucial by-elections in five assembly seats across Assam began this morning at 8 a.m., with tight security measures in place.
The counting of votes for the by-elections in Assam’s five assembly constituencies—Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri—started this morning at five designated centers across the state. A total of 1,078 polling stations were set up for the election, with over nine lakh registered voters casting their ballots. The process saw 34 candidates, including many first-timers, vying for the seats.
To ensure a smooth and secure counting process, companies of CAPF and Assam Police were deployed across the polling stations.
The final results of the by-elections are expected to be declared by the evening, after votes are counted at the designated centers.
The by-election polling for the five constituencies took place on November 13, with a voter turnout of 75.67%.
In Behali, BJP’s Diganta Ghatowal secures massive win against Congress’s Jayanta Borah, with the BJP-AGP-UPPL alliance presenting a united front despite opposition efforts to field a common candidate, which have been marred by internal conflicts.
Samaguri has emerged as one of the most intense battlegrounds in these by-elections. Formerly represented by Rakibul Hussain for five terms, who was recently elected to the Lok Sabha from Dhubri, the seat is now being contested by his son, Tanzil Hussain of Congress, against Diplu Ranjan Sarma of the BJP. The contest in Samaguri has been marked by frequent skirmishes between BJP and Congress supporters, leading to several complaints to the Election Commission and robust security measures to manage the political tensions.
The by-election contests in Assam’s constituencies are generating significant attention. In Bongaigaon, AGP’s Diptimayee Choudhury, wife of former MLA and current Barpeta MP Phani Bhusan Choudhury, is facing off against Congress’s Brajenjit Singha, a retired IPS officer.
The contest in Dholai sees BJP’s Nihar Ranjan Das competing against Congress’s Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha, while in Sidli, UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma is up against BPF’s Shuddho Kumar Basumatary, with Congress’s Sanjib Warle also in the fray.
The outcome of today’s counting will have significant political implications for both the ruling and opposition parties in Assam. The results, expected to be declared by the evening, will provide a clearer picture of voter sentiment and the state’s political landscape.
