December 21, 2024, marks the first-ever World Meditation Day, following a historic resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly on November 29, 2024. This landmark event recognizes meditation’s transformative benefits for mental and physical health, and its potential to promote peace and unity worldwide.
To celebrate the occasion, the Permanent Mission of India hosted a special event at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The event featured a live, global meditation session led by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the renowned Indian spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation. Themed “Meditation for Global Peace and Harmony,” the event emphasized meditation’s role in enhancing mental well-being and fostering global peace.
The UN General Assembly’s recognition of World Meditation Day is a significant step in acknowledging meditation’s ability to address rising stress, violence, and societal disconnection.
Meditation, an ancient practice that focuses on the present moment, has roots in religious, yogic, and secular traditions across cultures. Today, it is embraced globally, offering a universal tool for personal well-being and mental health. Beyond individual benefits, meditation fosters empathy, collaboration, and a sense of shared purpose, contributing to collective well-being.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also highlights the significant mental and physical health benefits of meditation, particularly mindfulness, as a key tool for stress management and overall well-being.
