In a significant development on Friday, the Supreme Court of India sought the response of the Gyanvapi Masjid Committee regarding an application filed by Hindu worshippers. The petitioners are requesting an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey of the sealed area of the mosque in Varanasi, where a “Shivlinga” is claimed to have been found.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan issued a notice to the Committee of Management, Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, which manages the Gyanvapi mosque, and other concerned parties. The bench has scheduled the next hearing for December 17, 2024. On the same day, the court will also hear other petitions related to the case, including a request to consolidate all suits and transfer them from the Varanasi district court to the Allahabad High Court.
The petitioners argued that the part of the mosque building, where the “Shivlinga” was allegedly found, was sealed following an interim order in May 2022, and again confirmed in November 2022. As a result, the ASI has not been able to conduct a survey of the sealed area. The petitioners emphasized that it would be in the interest of justice to allow the ASI to conduct a scientific survey using the latest methods and submit a report within a specified time. They also sought modification of the interim order to facilitate this survey.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had paused the carbon dating of the “Shivling,” deferring the implementation of the directions from the Allahabad High Court until further hearings. The Allahabad High Court had allowed a scientific survey of the “Shivling” under the supervision of the Varanasi District Judge, overturning a lower court’s rejection of a similar application in October 2022.
The ongoing legal battle surrounding the Gyanvapi mosque continues to attract significant attention as both sides prepare for further proceedings in the coming weeks.
