A devastating incident occurred on Monday morning in Assam’s Dima Hasao district when nine workers became trapped in a flooded coal mine at 3 Kilo, Umrangso.Over 24 hours having passed, ,three of the workers have been confirmed dead The remaining six workers are still trapped.
The workers, aged between 26 and 57, were caught in the disaster at the remote mining site. Due to the isolated location, rescue operations faced significant delays. Emergency teams from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), and the Army were unable to reach the site immediately on Monday.
By Tuesday morning, 30 personnel from the NDRF and eight from the SDRF had arrived at the scene. Additionally, a specialized rescue team, including divers, engineers, medical teams, and support staff from the Army and Assam Rifles, has now joined the ongoing efforts.
This tragedy brings back memories of another mining disaster in the nearby region of Meghalaya in 2018, when 15 workers lost their lives in a flooded rat-hole mine in the East Jaintia Hills. Dima Hasao, where the current tragedy unfolded, is known for its extensive coal, limestone, and granite quarrying activities. The coal reserves in Umrangso are part of Assam’s larger mining operations, known as Assam Quarries.
The rescue teams continue to work tirelessly to recover the trapped workers and bring closure to the families of those involved in this tragic accident.
