In a stunning display of batting power, Gujarat’s Urvil Patel has set a new record for the fastest century by an Indian batter in T20 cricket. Patel scored a blistering 100 off just 28 balls against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Wednesday, November 27. The match took place at the Emerald Heights International School Ground in Indore.
With this remarkable achievement, Patel surpassed the previous record held by Rishabh Pant, who had scored a 32-ball century for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh back in 2018 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Patel, a right-handed batter, remained unbeaten on 113 from 35 balls, which included seven fours and 12 sixes. His explosive knock helped Gujarat chase down a target of 156 in just 12.4 overs, with 58 balls to spare. In addition to breaking the Indian record, Patel’s 28-ball century is now the second-fastest in T20 history, just behind Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who scored a 27-ball century against Cyprus earlier this year.
This achievement adds to Patel’s growing list of records. Earlier in November 2023, he also made the second-fastest century by an Indian in List A cricket, scoring 100 off just 41 balls for Gujarat against Arunachal Pradesh in Chandigarh. His record-breaking century was just one ball slower than Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball century for Baroda against Maharashtra in 2010.
Despite his recent success, Patel’s journey to the top has been marked by setbacks. He was bought by Gujarat Titans for ₹20 lakh during the 2023 IPL auction but was released before the 2024 season. During the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, held in Saudi Arabia in November, Patel went unsold at his base price of ₹30 lakh.
Before this match, Patel had played 43 T20 matches, scoring 875 runs at an average of 20.83 and a strike rate of 154.32. His tally includes four half-centuries, with a highest score of 96. Patel’s remarkable ability to accelerate with the bat has made him a player to watch in the coming years.
Hailing from Mehsana in Gujarat, Patel’s cricketing journey began in 2018 when he made his T20 debut for Baroda against Mumbai in Rajkot. He also entered List A cricket that same year. However, it wasn’t until the previous edition of the Ranji Trophy that Patel made his first-class debut, showcasing his versatility across formats.
Patel’s record-breaking century is a testament to his explosive talent, and it’s clear that he is a rising star in Indian cricket, with a promising future ahead.
