A ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah appears to be holding after taking effect at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday (10 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday). The deal was brokered by the United States and France, with U.S. President Joe Biden announcing the agreement on Tuesday.
In Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, celebratory gunshots rang out as people took to the streets in a show of support for the cessation of hostilities. However, while the mood was jubilant, the Israeli military issued warnings for Lebanese residents to avoid returning to areas previously evacuated across the southern, eastern, and Beirut regions. Despite the warnings, many highways were congested with people heading back to their homes, many of which have been severely damaged by months of Israeli airstrikes.
While the ceasefire holds between Israel and Hezbollah, it does not extend to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where Israel is still engaged in fierce fighting with Hamas, another militant group backed by Iran. On Wednesday, Hamas also expressed a willingness to negotiate a truce, but it remains unclear when or if that will happen.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is seen as a major step toward de-escalating tensions that have lasted nearly 14 months, following the broader regional conflict triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel in October 2023. Despite the ceasefire, the war in Gaza continues to rage, and the deal does not address the humanitarian crisis unfolding there.
India Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement
India has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on Wednesday, expressing support for the decision and reiterating India’s stance on the importance of de-escalation in the region.
While the ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope for peace, the situation in Gaza remains dire, and the international community continues to call for broader efforts to bring an end to the ongoing violence in the Middle East.
