On Saturday morning, rescue teams recovered a second body from the flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, where at least nine miners are feared trapped. The mine, located in the Umrangso area, has been the focus of a vigorous rescue operation since the flooding occurred earlier this week.
The discovery of the second body comes after the first was recovered on Wednesday, raising concerns for the other miners still unaccounted for. The recovery marks a pivotal moment after six days of relentless efforts, totaling 144 hours of work, by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel.
The first body, retrieved at 7:36 am, has been identified as 26-year-old Lijan Magar, a resident of Dima Hasao. Just minutes later, the second body was recovered, though its identity remains unknown.
This is the second and third body found at the illegal rat-hole coal mine at Tin Kilo in Umrangso. The first body, identified as Nepalese miner Ganga Bahadur Srestha from Nepal’s Udayapur district, was recovered on January 8.
The rescue operations are focused on dewatering the mine using high-powered pumps provided by Coal India. Despite the challenges, teams are continuing their efforts to locate the remaining miners trapped underground.
As authorities press on with the search, hopes remain high for the safe recovery of the workers still missing in the flooded mine.
